Phillip Mills is Chief Executive Officer of Les Mills International, a company started by his father, and under Phillip’s reign has developed into one of the world’s leading creators and distributors of group fitness programs.
A former Commonwealth Games hurdles finalist in 1974 and 1978, Phillip studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, on a track scholarship, where he graduated in philosophy in 1978.
Inspired by the aerobics boom he had witnessed in the USA, on his return to New Zealand, Phillip developed his own group exercise system that would later grow to include the ten group fitness programs currently distributed by Les Mills International. Today, there are 160 million attendances at Les Mills’ classes each year, with 70,000 instructors teaching across 75 countries.
Phillip was Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year for New Zealand in 2004 and won the KEA World Class New Zealander Award for New Thinking in 2009. Phillip is married to Dr Jackie Mills, a medical practitioner and Director of Group Fitness for Les Mills.
Phillip is also a committed advocate for “green” business. He heads a group of business leaders lobbying for green business policy, and he and his wife Jackie are the co-authors of
Fighting Globesity – A Practical Guide to Personal Health and Global Sustainability (Random House, 2007).
